Things went disastrously wrong. It was a real mess. We tried to {compensate|mitigate the situation, but it was like trying to stop a tsunami with a teaspoon. We're still picking up the debris and feeling the blow of this epic fail.

This problem has spiraled out of control. It's a total fiasco. We've tried everything to fix it, but nothing seems to function. At this point, it feels like we're doomed. Honestly, I don't know what else to do. This is a mess of epic proportions.
This is So Bad, It's Funny (Not Really)
Sometimes you find yourself face-to-face with situations so terrible that you can't help but smile. It's like your brain tries to make sense of the sheer extent of destruction and just throws its hands up, opting for amusement as a coping strategy.
But then, you realize that it's not really funny. It's just plain terrible. And the laughter you felt morphs into a wistful, melancholic sound.
Ultimately, you are left with a sense of bewilderment. You question about the nature of it all. Was this intended to be funny?
Or were we just simply unfortunate enough to witness this spectacle unfold?
A Disaster of Epic Proportions

Worst Day Ever
It all started with a terrible case of morning hair. I couldn't do it to look presentable. As I was getting ready out the door, I fell and spilled all over myself. To make matters worse, I was extremely running behind for school.
I in a state of utter panic. My {boss|teacher|was absolutely furious. I tried to explain, but it was a complete disaster.
The rest of the day was just as bad. Everything. I couldn'tconcentrate.
By the time I got home, I was exhausted. This day, this atrocious day will be forever remembered as the worst day ever.
Things Went From Bad to Absolutely Terrible
It all started out horribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then read more it went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to scream into a pillow.
